5 steps on the way to your safety shoes

Your shoes accompany you all day every day, which is why we supply footwear that is breathable and very comfortable. They also protect you from injury. Breathable materials prevent moisture build-up so that you don’t need to worry about wet feet. Reinforcements in the heel area absorb the impact of each step you take ensuring that your feet do not get tired. Safety shoes are available in many sizes for both men and women.

Step 1 – The responsible professional association is also on hand to help

Safety shoes, safety sandals or safety boots? The choice is huge and before you buy new work shoes, you should ask your responsible professional association about what regulations apply to safety shoes in your region.

Step 2 – What does S1, S2 and S3 mean in connection with safety shoes?

Select the right safety class acc. to EN ISO 20345

Safety footwear can be assigned to the following safety classes:

  • SB Basic shoes (toe cap and slip resistant)
  • S1 Like SB + A (antistatic shoes), E (energy is absorbed in the heel area), FO (oil and petrol-resistant sole)
  • S1P Like S1 + P (penetration-proof/resistant)
  • S2 Like S1 + WRU (upper part of the shoe is resistant to water penetration and water absorption for at least 60 minutes)
  • S3 Like S1P + WRU (upper part of the shoe is resistant to water penetration and water absorption for at least 60 minutes) and a profiled outer sole.
  • S4 Basic shoes as completely waterproof boots with the additional requirements A (anti-static shoes), E (energy is absorbed in the heel area), FO (oil and petrol-resistant sole)
  • S5 Like S4 + P (penetration-proof) with a profiled outer sole.

All safety shoes have an aluminium, plastic or steel toe cap to protect the toes from heavy pressure or external impacts of up to 200 joules.

The shoes may also have the following protective properties:

  • HI – Thermal insulation, protection against burns on the soles of the feet of up to 150 °C (on hot surfaces for a contact period of up to 30 minutes)
  • CI – Cold insulation of the sole, protects the feet against low temperatures and, in particular, cold surfaces
  • HRO – Resistance to contact heat, brief exposure up to 300 °C
  • SRA – Anti-slip on ceramic tiles
  • SRB – Anti-slip on steel plates and glycerine
  • SRC – Anti-slip on ceramic tiles, steel plates and glycerine
  • ESD – Safety shoes with a leak resistance of between 100 kilo-ohm and 35 mega-ohm

Antistatic safety shoes

The terms ESD and antistatic are often confused, which is why we explain the difference below.

The EU Norm EN ISO 20345 and the norm EN ISO 20347 state that antistatic safety shoes and work shoes should be used to reduce electrostatic charging and guarantee its discharge. They should therefore be worn wherever electrical shocks from equipment or parts are possible or where there is a risk that flammable substances could ignite on sparks.

What does ESD mean?

This is about preventing electrostatic discharging between two bodies, for instance human to human, or human to equipment or part. We have all experienced electrical shocks from a spark when touching a door handle. In companies that use sensitive equipment, the smallest of sparks could destroy parts or delete data. To prevent this you need to wear ESD shoes that prevent electrostatic charging. They are required for instance in the following operations:

  • when producing sensitive, electrical parts
  • in flammable fluids and gases
  • in laboratories and medical areas
  • in paint shops
  • working with microchips

ESD shoes are NOT suitable for electricians that work at sources with electrical voltage.

What safety shoes are best in the summer, and which ones are best in the winter?

  • Are you looking for lightweight shoes for the summer or for warm indoor rooms?

Our safety sandals S1 are ideal thanks to their air permeability. They combine all-round protection with a pleasant foot climate. Models: Pallas, Siom x-12

Do you need special safety shoes?

  • Metal-free and leather-free shoes

Do you have an allergy to leather or simply want to avoid wearing shoes made of animal materials? Are you looking for lightweight safety shoes or safety trainers without metal whose toe caps are not thermally conductive?
We have a range of safety shoes with plastic toe caps that are approximately 50 % lighter than steel cap shoes:

  • Orthopaedic foot protection acc. to DGUV Rule 112–191

If your safety shoes need orthopaedic adjustments, the shoes must be certified according to DGUV 112-191 (BGR 191) / ÖNorm Z 1259. You can filter your search for these shoes with the property ‘Suitable for insole user’.

Step 4 –How do I clean and care for my safety shoes correctly?

Work shoes need to satisfy a number of requirements whilst also being subjected to heavy wear and dirt depending on the wearer’s job. The better you look after your work shoes, the longer you will be able to use them.

  • Cleaning safety shoes

    a) Regularly check that the shoes are still intact or if they are damaged
    b) If your shoes are very dirty, brush off the dry dirt first
    c) Then you can wash off the shoes under water and dry them well afterwards (not on radiators – the leather will become brittle!). Ideally, you should stuff them with newspaper.

  • Shoes care

    a) Safety shoes made of smooth leather
To ensure that the leather of your safety shoes remains durable, it is important to apply a care product at regular intervals. Leather that is well looked after remains beautiful and breathable for longer.
Our program contains matching e.s. High-gloss shoe cream for safety shoes subject to heavy wear. This cream penetrates the leather quickly, keeps shoes supple and is water-repellent.

    b) Safety shoes made of Nubuck leather
Suede needs to be cared for differently than smooth leather. Never use products that contain grease or wax because this will spoil the suede. We recommend regularly roughening up Nubuck leather with a brush and using an impregnation spray.

    c) Safety shoes made of textile or microfibre
The best care agent for textile shoes is the e.s. Cleaning and care spray. This 3-in-1 formula cleans, cares for and impregnates your shoes.

  • Impregnation

To ensure permanent protection, we recommend regular use of the e.s. Impregnation spray. It is suitable for all materials (including smooth leather, suede and textile surfaces with climate membranes) and protects your feet from the wet, dirt, oil and dust.

  • Preventing odours

To prevent odours developing at an early stage, we recommend not wearing the same shoes every day. This gives the shoes the opportunity to air out. If your shoes got damp at work, let them dry out completely before wearing them again.

TIP: If your safety shoes still smell somewhat unpleasant, we recommend e.s. shoe deo.

Step 5 – Accessories for your work shoes
