OUR NEW CAMPUS IN THE PADDIES

Long-term success requires a sustainable approach and action on an economic, ecological and social level. We are thankful for the positive development that our company has undergone, and we owe this largely to the people who work in our companies, especially the people who make our products. And here, Bangladesh is of special importance for Engelbert Strauss ...

First Chair for Sustainability and Textile Innovation

The campus in the paddies, located in Chattogram, is closely linked with a cooperative university project initiated by Engelbert Strauss together with GIZ, a German corporation for international cooperation. Bangladesh’s textile sector is in a position to further improve by targeting more complex products that generate greater added value. This will also serve to foster the country’s economic development. And that is where our project comes in – we want to permanently improve skill sets with regard to social responsibility, environmental protection and technical innovation in the country. ...

Production

Production

We manufacture our products in more than 25 countries across the globe – in Europe, Africa and primarily in Asia. We also check compliance with human rights and labour rights for all existing, and especially new production countries. We also take national studies into account and talk to stakeholders or other brand manufacturers. Based on this information, we analyse the threats and opportunities of a production facility in each country. Wherever the production location may be, long-term and trusting partnerships with our partner companies are very important to us. We have long-standing relationships with many of our business partners, in fact we have been working for six years or more with almost 70 percent of the 100 companies. We publish an overview of all sewing shops with names and addresses on the website of the Fair Wear Foundation at www.fairwear.org The majority of our products are produced by partner companies in Asia. Many of our local partner companies have specific ...

Highest quality standards

In addition to function and design, our understanding of product quality also includes aspects of safety, environmental sustainability and fairness. We therefore place emphasis on those aspects both during the development of our own collections and the compilation of our product ranges. As part of the continuous improvement of our products we are also looking for materials, which are produced in a more sustainable fashion.

Sustainability at the product level is closely connected to the durability of our products. Our workwear is durable and can be worn for a long time. Our new product development process takes durability into account as an important requirement and integrates this into corresponding product designs. When optimising existing products, we work in interdisciplinary teams and also with external ...

Environmental awareness in all company departments

Particularly, as a family business we would like to leave future generations the same living conditions and resources that are available to us today. This environmental commitment we regard as a continuous and natural corporate responsibility. Step by step we promote new environmentally sustainable developments and ideas, from the careful selection of the raw materials to the virtual product manufacturing process through to logistics and the disposal of packaging.

Commitment locally and worldwide

Above and beyond our entrepreneurial activities, we would like to make useful contributions to society. We have decided to focus our social commitments on education projects in developing and emerging countries: in particular we would like to make access to education easier for children of workers at our manufacturing sites, for example through the construction of school buildings and providing teaching materials. We do not have a fixed yearly budget for the money required for these projects, but decide the number of projects to support at our own discretion and personal beliefs. You are welcome to forward your enquiries to our charity and sponsoring team at spendenanfragen@engelbert-strauss.de

Climate-friendly approaches

As a brand manufacturer our contribution to the protection of the climate is of particular importance to us. Climate protection for us means to not generate CO₂ emissions in the first instance wherever possible and to reduce or offset them if they are generated. Our emphasis in logistics, transport and business premises is to adopt more climate friendly approaches.

Production

Most of the energy consumption and emissions in relation to Engelbert Strauss workwear result from production – especially from the production sites located in Asia. We have limited influence there, as these are not our own companies, but production partners. Nevertheless, we have set ourselves the challenge of gradually limiting the effects on the climate there, too. One of our largest production partners in Bangladesh has already taken steps in this regard: our products have been manufactured using primarily solar power at the Chattogram sites since 2021. And manufacturing at our own CI FACTORY in Germany is powered exclusively by electricity from renewables.

Logistics

From production to the warehouse, we mainly transport our products by ship and rail, reducing carbon emissions and costs in the process. We cut down on air and truck transports wherever possible. When shipping our products, we also look for ways to avoid carbon emissions and to offset those that are unavoidable. Our shipping providers who deliver the majority of our parcels to customers – and bring them back to us in the event of returns – are working on cutting these emissions. At the same time, we are continuously looking for ways to reduce the number of returns. Our shipping providers GLS, DPD and DHL calculate the carbon emissions caused by parcel transport and offset these by investing in certified climate protection projects. Our partner GLS, for example, invests in a solar project in India via the organisation ClimatePartner (Thar Desert near Jodhpur).

Transport

Where the activity allows, we have been offering working from home since 2020 in order to reduce the risk of infection. Thus, we avoid numerous journeys to work and emissions. We have been using video conferencing for many years, which saves time and ensures that emissions are not generated in the first instance. Thus a high number of meetings can take place quickly, easily and almost emission free whilst we avoid travel by aeroplane, car and train. The company also provides cycles to speed up environmentally-friendly commuting between the building at the Biebergemünd site. There are also covered bicycle stands for all employees who ride to work every day. Constructing a separate bus stop for Engelbert Strauss in front of the company building has made commuting by public transport more attractive for our employees.

Business premises

We procure 100% of electricity for all our business premises from renewable sources. Photovoltaic systems are in operation on the roofs of several of our business premises and workwearstores. Any additionally required electricity has been procured from regenerative energy (hydropower) since 2016 from the municipal utilities. Also during the planning of our site expansions, our management team placed particular emphasis on the use of climate-friendly technologies. Economical and efficient energy usage is ensured by a number of means, including a geothermal field (700 kW heat output) at our company campus in Biebergemünd, Germany, and, nearby, a combined heat and power plant (240 kW output) and heat recovery in the ventilation systems at our CI FACTORY. Additionally the buildings are equipped with energy-saving LED lighting as well as an intelligent system to provide energy efficient heating and cooling. We are always looking for ways to further cut our electricity usage.
